Interview by the World Journal: The Huge Social Impact of Overruling Roe v. Wade

On May 2, 2022, Politico obtained a draft of the Supreme Court’s upcoming decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This case provides an opening to the conservative Justices to re-assess the 1973 landmark case Roe v. Wade that established the constitutional right to abortion before fetus viability. The leaked draft opinion has caused a huge concern among interested parties. Intensive debates occurred among different social groups.  Many Chinese-Americans are also deeply concerned about this fundamental political and constitutional issue.

On May 12, 2022, one of the most well-known Chinese media the World Journal invited Attorney Vivien Wang to talk about this draft opinion by Justice Alito and share her thoughts on the abortion right, American constitutional law, and the polarization between two parties in today’s political environment.

As a prestigious Chinese-American attorney in Nashville, TN, Vivien Wang has been observing and studying the social and political issues in TN and the US for a long time.  Familiar with the conservative political inclinations and party disputes, she shared with the World Journal her systematic analysis of the reasoning of the draft opinion, breaking down the structure of arguments Justice Alito used to overrule the precedent decision Roe v. Wade.  In addition to a historical account of Roe Court’s establishment of the abortion right, Vivien Wang also explained the unique federalist institutions of the US and how such a self-governing capacity of the states could impact the potential radical change in this constitutional right of American people.
